Does religion create a shallow ethical foundation?

I think they promote authoritarianism, because they don't give reasons for morality, or any discussion. Ask most religious people why something is wrong and the only answer they can give you is, "because X Holy book says so." WHY does it say so? well that's arbitrary. This is not real morality.
